Can you look at an Instagram profile without an account?

Yes, for public profiles

An Instagram profile viewer loads the profile in the browser with no login, so there is no account of yours for Instagram to record. Private profiles show only their public header: picture, name, bio and counts.

Key points
  1. 1

Instagram does not show anyone who visited their profile, signed in or not.

  2. 2

A profile viewer opens the picture at full size, the bio, the grid, the highlights and the live stories of a public account.

  3. 3

The only list Instagram keeps is the story viewer list, and a viewer keeps you off it.

  4. 4

A private profile shows its header to everyone and nothing more to anyone the owner has not approved.

What you can see

Everything a public profile shows, in one place.

An IG profile viewer shows the same things the app shows a visitor, with no sign-in and no app.

  1. 1

    The profile picture, full size

The app shows a small circle. A viewer shows the picture at the size it was uploaded.

  2. 2

    Name, bio and link

The display name, the bio text, and the link the account put in its bio.

  3. 3

    The post grid

Photos, carousels and reels in the order they were posted, each one openable.

  4. 4

    Highlights

Saved stories grouped under the bio, playable one by one.

  5. 5

    Stories that are live

The circles at the top: whatever the account posted in the last 24 hours.

  6. 6

    Followers and following

The counts, and for a public account, the lists themselves.

How it works

Three steps, no Instagram login at any point.

  1. 1

    Type the username

Enter the public Instagram username you want to look at. You do not need an account of your own.

  2. 2

    Open the profile

The viewer opens in a new tab with the picture, the bio, the counts and the story circles.

  3. 3

    Go through the grid

Open any post, play any highlight or story. Nothing of yours touches the account.

What Instagram records

Does Instagram show who viewed a profile?

No. People search for a way to see who viewed their Instagram profile, and there is none: Instagram does not keep that list. The one list it keeps is for stories. A viewer keeps you off that as well. On your own account, a who unfollowed me check names the followers that left between two readings.

Public or private

What a viewer shows for each kind of account.

The setting the owner chose decides everything. A viewer shows exactly what Instagram makes public and cannot change it. To make sure you have the right account before you look, an Instagram username search starts from the handle.

Public accountPrivate account
Profile pictureFull sizeSmall size only
Name and bio Yes Yes
Follower and following counts Yes Yes
Post grid Yes No
Stories and highlights Yes No
Follower and following lists Yes No
A private profile stays private.

People search for a private Instagram profile viewer. It does not exist. A private account shows the same header to everyone, and nothing more to anyone the owner has not approved. No website can change that.

Who uses it

What people open a profile for.

Most reasons are ordinary, and none of them need an account of your own.

Emma CarterBefore she buys
Example
The situation
Emma found a shop selling handmade ceramics. A shop's profile shows real stock, real customers in tagged photos, and how recently anyone posted.
What they did
She opened the public profile in a viewer, checked the tagged photos and the date of the last post, then ordered.
Daniel MoreauBefore he meets
Example
The situation
Daniel was about to buy a used bike from a seller who sent an Instagram username. A profile shows whether a person, a business or a seller is who they say they are, before a meeting or a deal.
What they did
He looked through the seller's public profile and grid before the meeting, with no account of his own involved.
Claire DuboisFor work
Example
The situation
Claire recruits for a design studio. Marketers and recruiters look at public profiles to see how a brand or a candidate presents in public.
What they did
She read a candidate's public profile and portfolio posts in the browser, without following or liking anything.
Lena HoffWithout the app
Example
The situation
Lena has no Instagram account and does not want the app, but still wanted to see a public profile a friend sent her.
What they did
She typed the username into a profile viewer on her laptop and saw the picture, bio and grid in full.

A profile viewer

Loads the whole public profile on a web page with no account behind it. Picture, bio, grid, highlights and stories all open.

Instagram's own website

A public profile opens logged out, but after a short look it asks you to log in, and stories do not play.

A second account

Everything opens, but you need a login, and the second account is recorded wherever a view is recorded.

Any device

Phone, tablet or computer.

On a computer

Open the viewer in any browser. The grid is easier to read on a large screen, and a full-size profile picture shows at its real size. The follower and following lists of a public profile open the same way in an Instagram follower viewer.

On an iPhone or Android phone

It runs in the phone's browser. Nothing is installed, so there is no app asking for your contacts, your photos or a login. On a computer, a private window also keeps the visit out of your own history, as the incognito Instagram viewer page explains.

Any time

Stories stay for 24 hours and highlights stay until the owner removes them, so there is no rush to look at a public profile.

Is it right for you

Good for, not for.

A profile viewer is good for

  • Looking at a public profile without an Instagram account or the app
  • Seeing a profile picture at full size
  • Checking a shop, a seller or a creator before you follow, buy or meet

A profile viewer is not for

  • Private accounts beyond the public header
  • Direct messages
  • Following, liking or commenting
Stay safe

Three rules for any profile viewer.

  1. DoGive a viewer a public username and nothing elseDon'tNever type your Instagram password: a page that asks you to log in to Instagram is not a viewer
  2. DoUse it in the browser on an iPhone, an Android phone or a computer: no install neededDon'tBe wary of viewer apps that ask for wide permissions
  3. DoWalk away from private-account promisesDon'tTrust a site that says it can open a private profile: it is after your details or your money

Questions

About viewing profiles unseen.

Short answers to what people ask before they use an Instagram profile viewer.

01Can I view an Instagram profile without an account?
Yes, if the profile is public. An Instagram profile viewer loads the public profile in the browser without any login, so you can view an Instagram profile without an account of your own.
02Will they know I looked at their profile?
No. Instagram does not show anyone who visited their profile, whether the visitor was signed in or not. The only list it keeps is the list of signed-in accounts that watched a story, and a viewer keeps you off that too.
03What can I see on a private profile?
The profile picture at its small size, the name, the bio and the follower and following counts. Posts, stories, highlights and the follower list stay closed to everyone the owner has not approved.
04Can I see the profile picture at full size?
Yes. Instagram shows profile pictures as a small circle. A viewer opens the same picture at the size it was uploaded, for public accounts.
05Can I see who someone follows?
For a public account, yes: the following list and the follower list are both public. For a private account, no.
06Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in the browser on an iPhone, an Android phone or a computer. There is nothing to install and no Instagram login.
07Is an Instagram profile viewer the same as a story viewer?
They overlap. A profile viewer opens the whole public profile: picture, bio, grid, highlights and the stories that are live. A story viewer is the same thing with the stories in front.
08Why does a username show nothing?
Three usual reasons: the username is spelled differently or has changed, the account is private, or the account has been deactivated.
09Is it free?
Reading this site is free. The viewer has its own plans, shown before you pay for anything.
10Is this site part of Instagram?
No. ProfileScanner is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Instagram or Meta.
11Is this an Instagram page viewer?
Yes. An Instagram page and an Instagram profile are the same thing: the account's picture, bio, counts and grid of posts. The viewer opens a public page with no account of yours.
